Guidance on how to start volunteering for flood rescue

Just a clarification/guidance to all those who want to volunteer but don’t know where to start. Also who have been sending me private messages that they would like to help me. I would like to say something very honestly that there are too many works to be done for this rescue and not everyone can do all the work. So we shall start with one work at a time. So to start volunteering, all you need to do is browse my updates thats posted for volunteers requirements and get in touch with the contact number that’s mentioned in the post. The concerned coordinator will guide you. Many times though we are interested to volunteer, we wouldnt be able to do because we don’t know where to approach. Continue reading »

Chennai Flood rescue : My visit to the flooded area – Part 2 of 2

If you have not yet read the Part 1 of this post please click here to read it and then come back to this post.

After I got the news that my grandfather is safe, I felt like my burden got lowered and I was completely out of the unknown tension that was in my mind. Because the tension is relieved, I wanted to do more work in the rescue operation. So I started my bike as per my plan and rode to TNagar via Tondiarpet, Royapuram,Beach Station, Marina, Citi Centre and Gemini. Till Marina route was so clear and no problem with any of the roads (except little water stagnation in the subway near Reserve Bank, which is usual).

And from then I didn’t want to take the clear routes and I wanted to visit the flooded routes. So I took the route via Mirsahibpet and Lloyds road and reached Vijaya Raghava Road (opposite to Ramee mall and Hyatt). That was the place I got the shock first. It was too dark without power and people were standing in the road. Water level was high that it would definitely cross 50% of my bike height. Continue reading »

Chennai Flood rescue : My visit to the flooded area – Part 1 of 2

It was 4 days since I came out of my house and I have being sharing only online updates regarding the rain and the rescue operations in Chennai. Sometimes I was feeling low that I didn’t get into the field work and help people physically. However I have been convincing myself that If I come out my house I wont have access to Internet (Whatsapp and Facebook) and sometimes there won’t be of access to phone calls as well and hence I would lose the connection with people and I wouldn’t be able to help them much. If I’m at home I would be able to share a lot of updates, co-ordinate with the volunteers and food donors and reach thousands of people and would be able to help.
Everyday I have been getting more than 120 calls ( I dont even know who they are, they find me through google and Facebook updates) asking me to check the status of their friends and relatives. Though I was not able to give them the clear picture, my words convinced them and kept relaxed. All I would say in the call is “rescue operations are going in full swing and everyone is safe. The only problem is we don’t have power and mobile signal in the flooded area and hence we are unable to communicate with your friends. They will soon communicate with you”. Atleast these words gave them hope and convinced the people who called me over the phone. Some of them called from other states and other countries as well. So for them when they were able to speak to me, that itself is a great relief that they were able to communicate to someone in Chennai. Because a lot of them tried Emergency numbers and they were unable to connect through any of those numbers. I even received few thanks messages on mobile after they got communication from their friends who were flood victims and they were moved to safer area. This gave a lot of satisfaction for me. On the other hand I had no clue about my grandfather who was also the flood victim. The last message I got from him was yesterday which just one sms saying water level is reducing. Rescue calls for today were less to me. I hardly received 20 to 30 calls today till evening. So I was sure that the situation is better now for online coordination and it’s high time I move out of my house to do some field work.
